1878-CC VAM-15 with Quadrupled eyelid?
1878-CC VAM-15 with Quadrupled eyelid?
This 1878-CC coin seems to have the characteristics of a VAM-15. It's just that this coin also has Quadrupled eyelid. Is the Quadrupled eyelid common to 1878-CC? Thanks....

That is indeed a VAM 15. The odd feature you've noted along the eye's front edge is on all examples. It does give the appearance of 'shallow spikes' as seen on some of the 78 Philly and SF issues, but I believe in this case, the 'spikes' are part of the same mottled texture found along the entire profile. The VAM 15 obverse is a minor doubled die with close Class II spread visible in the lower hair. The edges of of all the left stars show between 6 and 10 images. The most noteworthy doubling is found on the 4th right star. It clearly shows one of the few examples of a Class VII spread with a broken over intact point.
For identification purposes, the gouge of the 'spiked lip' really is a 'one and done' diagnostic.
