O/T... Newp... Lincoln Bronze Plaque by VDB!

Post by CascadeChris » Sun Aug 16, 2020 6:42 pm

Thoguht I'd share a pretty cool recent acquisition. There seems to be a few different styles or separate castings from original moulds (kind of like old master plate engravings I guess?) so aside it being an inventory buy I got it to study so I know the ins & outs of them if/when one crosses my path again. Aside the show and tell for the coolness aspect, if anyone is familiar with these or has a link to a reference website or book that catalogs these I'd be appreciative.

Too bad Morgan didn't do something similar for our babies 😔 How cool would that be!

Nice pickup! How thick is it? It looks like it got a little banged up on the top and right edges. Would it take to being mounted and hung from a wall? A table-top stand would also work I guess.

Amazing! That is the kind of thing I use to go to local auctions for. All I ever saw was junk. Thanks.🐍

I dont have it at hand but its about 1/4" thick. And yes, it does have a small planchet crack (lol) at top center but I gather thats an easy fix by an art restorer for a not much $$ if necessary.

Yes, it can be mounted or standed. Ive seen ones online that have sold recently with a photo frame type kickstand, mounted to a marble or wood backing etc. Maybe this one had a wood or stone backing at one time. And from what I've seen they sell in the $500/800-$2k range but I'm not sure what makes which which. 🤔

I think he has one. Pretty sure he's the reason I knew what this was the instant I saw it. Been meaning to shoot him an email to see if I'm remembering that correctly and also to see if he knows any more about them.

If we ever get back to the major show circuit in any semblance of normalcy, stop by Paul Cunningham's table. He wrote 'the book' on Lincoln material and my have one or two of these in one of his cases at any given time.

@pete$298 saw that one. While the back does look similar, like maybe mine is the same as that one but mine is missing the back bronze plate, mine does have indentations on the corners and sides exactly where that one has screws but my indentations don't have threaded holes for screws. 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️

Good to know. Thanks JR. This one will most likely be sold or traded away by then but I'm very much intrigued to learn more about these even after this one is gone. 😊

There are a small number of 1907 originals, and hundreds of copies and knock-offs. Also, there are many European and American plaques of similar style by excellent sculptors and a lot by 2nd and 3rd rate plasterers. I recall a Belgian version that is much superior to Brenner's portrait of Lincoln's coat.
