1878 S VAM 17 Somthing Progression Photos

I picked the 2 coins below 2 days ago, more because of the deep gouge and heavier die scratch's than the later one. They both are VAM 17's kind of both have no denticles on the reverse are all left. The earlier one has something right on the neck line.

Judging from the bust line only, compensating for softness in focus; same state, different stage. Agreed, interesting.

VAM-17. Was the gouge worn away or polished away? Hard to compare the photographs, but based on the fineness of the crack at the bust point, Rod's coin appears to be the earlier minting. But, I suppose this is impossible if Rod's coin shows a remnant of the same gouge.

I would think worn away rather than polished away. Later mintage seems right to me.

Considering the progression of the 1883-O VAM-31 and 1883-O VAM-31A for the lines in the D void; the lines in the hair valley of the Rod's coin appear thicker. Thus, the later minting. Agreed.

Here is a photo of the latest one I have found and I just bought it tonight. Look as how open the hair spacing is on this one!

Wow. Thanks for posting. I realize that there are hundreds of progressions to appreciate. By happenstance, I just happen to take an interest in this one. If possible, I would like to see the polishing lines in the hair valley for this coin. I know that others are practiced in estimating state according to the denticles. Me; not so much.

i have studied the vam17 eds-lds, a ,b, and c and vam 66, quite a bit and i don't remember the stage with the gouge! this has been quite topic here for a few weeks. had multiple talks with jeff oxman about them.

I had a heck of a time getting the gouge remnant to show.
Not a good photo but I finally get the remnant to show.

Nice on Russ. My 17 (17c?) I cherrypicked it soely due to how much hair is missing. Wasn't familiar with the progression and when i saw the hair while flipping through boxes I had to put it in the buy pile. I was pleasantly surprised it was part of the 17 family when I had time to look closer as I remember reading about that progression when I was green and thinking it was so cool

You definitely caught that feature. Sometimes it takes quite a few shots to capture what you want people to see.

i'd lean towards the gouge being polished away as between images 4 and 5 the hair around that area is also decreased but somehow we don't have polishing lines. i'm not saying they polished the die just for that gouge; i'm sure that is just a by-product. hard to see that much of the die being worn away on its own.

Here are images of the V-17a that just cam in the mail, not quite sure why its not PL but its a very nice MS-63 with vary clear and strong denticles on the rev.
