Pattern or regular issue Morgan dollar? Collector wants to know.
Pattern or regular issue Morgan dollar? Collector wants to know.
Well, OK --- this was 129 years ago, but it's still an interesting letter from someone who was an ordinary coin collector for many decades.
I have had made to me an offer of sale for an 1878 Bland Dollar 7 feathers in the eagle’s tail, three leaves on the end of the branch that is held by the eagle, i.e., it looks something like this [sketch] instead of [sketch], or three bunches of three leaves each.
Will you kindly inform me whether this coin bearing the 3 leaves only; was an error in the regular issue or simply a pattern piece of rejected design. Your answer will oblige. The piece is to be sold soon and I desire to know as soon as possible or I will lose chance.
Yours respectfully,
Giles R. Anderson

I wonder if Superintendent responded.
It sounds like it is referring to a pattern piece that is shown in the book Comprehensive Catalogue & Encyclopedia of U.S. Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars (1977 edition) on page 49, figure 5. It resembles what is described in the letter.
Thanks for the interesting letter.

I may not be the best, but I do not know anyone better.

A reply has not been found; but, letters sent by the Philadelphia Mint Superintendent have not been digitized.

"... simply a pattern piece of rejected design," almost makes it sound like a pattern would have been something the potential buyer wasn't really interested in. It would be cool if searching the NNP auction catalog archives actually turned up a 7TF pattern (nowadays J-1550) in the sale of the collection of one Giles Anderson.

Anderson was of modest means - like most coin collectors of his, or any, era. In 1885 he was a bookkeeper at the paraffin company and by 1891 he had been promoted to a secretarial position. His name first appears in 1885 and is last seen in 1922....but not everything has been digitized, so he might have begin collecting earlier and stopped later than those dates.
