Think I have narrowed this low quality one down to two VAM's
What do you all think?

What 2 VAM's, and why?

Original thought was 9 and 77
Am leaning towards 77
Nine upper tailfeathers
Lack of die file lines inside the bow
I've been wrong on attributing the variety many times

It's going to be a long uphill attribution based on the condition and lack of detailed pics.
I am NO expert on this date....but

Focus on the date placement and the deep secondaries.
i.e. Inner bow scratches, makers mark and LIBERTY, before you discount the V9...
you will need the minutia ("die poop") markers for a correct attribution.

If you can do close ups, it would help, us out here, help you...

I agree about the quality of this one being low
Was difficult to pickup the die file lines if any around the bear claw
Have added a couple of closeups
Date placement seems to match
Upper tailfeathers detail seems to match
And there are no die file lines inside the bow as shown on VAM 9

The 9 just looks closed , but other indicators suggest it maybe a 77 . Just the photos are hard to determine .

Those file lines are pretty lite.
Agree on date and MM placement, for V9.

Do you see the scratch below the makers mark?

Following up on Juan's post, two things to consider here...
Date position for 1879 does not vary, but there are repunched dates on some of the dies.
The reverse on the VAM 9 and 77 are virtually identical, The polished out lines inside the bow occur at the same time the extra upper tail feathers get partially effaced - in other words VAM 77A.
Agree this is a VAM 9
