Possible new 1878-S die marriage!?
Possible new 1878-S die marriage!?
Today, I got my most recent ANACS submission back; I took advantage of their $10 special back at the TNA show here in TX and sent in an assortment of raw coins I had accumulated, including a couple from the TNA show.
Highlights:
1884-CC GSA hard plastic holder MS-63 (it's a V3; this was an EBAY bargain I found earlier this year; yes sometimes I pick up non-1878 material!)
1878-S VAM 29 MS 63 (upgrade for my MS 61 specimen)
1878-S VAM 43 die 2 MS 64 (upgrade for my MS 63 specimen)
1878-S VAM 78 die 5 MS 60 details (scratched). (hole filled)
1878-S VAM ?? VG-8. (I thought I sent in a VAM 1I; quite the rare bird and 1st use of the B2 reverse at the San Francisco mint; but, NO! JR's comments: "Reverse as VAM-1i, but with an apparently unlisted obverse. Note the over polished L and strong gouges in BERT of LIBERTY." So, this one will be taking a summer trip to LVA. Upon closer look, it looks like the area below the designer's initial is overpolished too. And, (sigh), I still need a VAM 1i, so the hunt continues...

OB Pics please, eye, 4th star, & neck.
Also
Rev pic of Left wing, knock, R , and S for location.
Interesting but strange, anything is possible with SF in 1878.
Remarriage with polished initial ??? After Vam 18A??..

Will try to get some photos in the AM.
Re: Possible new 1878-S die marriage!?
I looked thru the listings and didn't find a clear match with any known obverse. Y'all got some huntin' on your hands

Re: Possible new 1878-S die marriage!?
There are only 7 1i listings in the SSDC registry, the highest lower grade AU.
I had bought this raw attributed and never gave it a second look after seeing die polish lines on reverse.
Now, back in hand, the gouges thru BERT really stand out even on a VG coin. Very over polished area below the ‘m’ too.

Is this the one I sold you? If we t was, it shows I am slipping. Couldn’t imagine vam 1i having two obverses, as rare as it is.

If I sent it to LVA - HE would say something like "I do not look at coins this worn - find a nice one and try again. Thanks....."

I figure it’s worth a shot going to OH; i’ve had a few rejection letters; besides, I need to order this year’s update anyway.

Polished ‘L’
Re: Possible new 1878-S die marriage!?
I would try too.
Re: Possible new 1878-S die marriage!?
If someone has a VAM 1I to lend Clay before he sends the coin to Leroy, that would help tremendously. Leroy's not fond of using low-grade coins for new discoveries, but another coin that gave clear context would help matters.

A copy of the ANACS packing slip would help too.
