Consistency or the lack therof

Post by twohawks » Wed May 29, 2019 4:20 pm

Well a few may remember this coin from an old thread. This coin was a PCGS 30 grade, and I was far from happy, I sent it in for a re grade and it graded 35, I just broke it out and now its an XF 40. I think it has nice eye appeal for the grade of XF 40 but it also has the strike, lack of ware and luster of an XF 45. The photos really do not show the luster BTW.

I think its graded correctly because the eye appeal drops it, but it looks better than many XF45 coins.

My largest grip is that it took 3 submissions to get this in a correct grade. The difference from a 30 to an XF 40 is a huge difference in what both coins look like. I mean an AU50 to AU 55 or somewhere between could be a judgment call, but VF 30 to an XF is mind boggling

That was a 30 at one time?
Ridiculous. Stupid ridiculous.
When in doubt... don't.

I'd have taken the black goo off the eagle's breast and hair over the ear after cracking it out. Good to hear it's in the right holder now.

Ah the magical world of grading where the subjectivity issues drive me crazy. The right grader on the right day can be thousands of dollars better than the wrong grader on the wrong day. We feel your pain!

Im in complete agreement with JB about removing the BLACK areas on eagle breast &
obv above ear. IMHO =the strike was bold enough for XF but the black areas led graders to
lower opinions until later others realized the true grade boldness
Being a 89 CC with huge uptick value of grade, didnt help the prior graders opinions
Finally got decent grade but getting that black off would maybe get xf45

All the above! They know a money coin when they see it.

I would be cautious about removing the black spots. That may reveal bright shinny spots......

I wonder what would happen to the grade if you submitted it for restoration and grading?

The thought of restoration and re-grade has crossed my mind, as this coin has graded 3 times and shows no issues. It has the luster of an XF 45 and the detail for it, it just lacks the eye appeal.
