What causes this?

Post by Raybob15239 » Wed Mar 20, 2019 11:07 pm

Looking to learn... Saw this on eBay. It did not sell. I have never seen this sunken rim effect, at least not to this extent. Is this the result of die fatigue?

Noob question here: wouldn't pmd cause damage to the numbers in the date and not just sit behind it?

That is what I am trying to figure out. The sunken area around the rim does not appear to have resulted In distortion of the letters or numbers.

I'd lean toward saying it's the planchet itself before it got struck. The date looks fine but where the obverse letters on the top hit the concave band you can see where they bend and distort to follow the shallow crevice. From my eyes that coin was stamped on a badly pressed out planchet...

I always assumed die fatigue, but I am proved wrong on here quite often

I see a ridge ring caused by planchets hitting the die and being forced outward. you'll see it a lot on Lincoln cents.
