Just got this one back from ANACS and JR, MS63. AOH as 19A, looks EDS to me.
Any idea of value on it?
Thanks
1921-P V19A
Re: 1921-P V19A
This is an impossible question to answer – and I apologize for my too-long reply, but this is a fun coin to write about.
VAM 19A is a spectacular die break coin with a large displaced area above the M in AMERICA that extends upward-left to the rim. It is one of very few 1921-Ps rated R-7... which I believe is fully deserved. I am very glad to have one. At its terminal state, the reverse die created VAM 19B, which has a monster rim cud that extends all the way from above the M to above the I in AMERICA. Only one 19B example is currently known and I consider it to be the ultimate rarity (by far) among all 1921-Ps.
Despite there being 15 VAM 19As registered in the SSDC (versus seven VAM 19s, which have no cracks at all), they are rarely offered for sale. In fact, I have recorded just three sales in over 10 years of watching, and none of them have been in Mint State:
1921- 19A 58 NGC May-12 CS $500
1921- 19A 58 ANACS Mar-17 E $32
1921- 19A 53 raw Jun-13 E $30
I can't tell you anything about the insane sale that took place at a coin show, other than it was reported to me while I was there and I feel enormously sorry for the buyer. On the other hand, I consider the two eBay sales to be nice buys.
In my opinion, the desirability of a 19A increases with the severity of the rightmost break that extends from the top right corner of the M, and the degree of resulting displacement it causes. Can you post a photo of yours?
Coming up with a value is a total guess, since there are no "lists" for 19A to be a part of that lead to respect, appreciation or demand from the broader Morgan collecting community. This is a classic case of rarity having little to absolutely no correlation with value. And because it is a 1921-P there are very few specialists to who care about it. The six or eight individuals who post here on VAMworld may be all there are.
Your wild guess for a 63 is as good as mine. $75? My gut reaction is "yes". $100? Maybe. $200? I doubt it.

When in doubt... don't.

Thanks Dennis! I will try to post a pic here, I'm having trouble with the sizing of the photos.

Here's a pic of the coin in question...
Re: 1921-P V19A
Thanks for the photo. Your 19A looks to be a slightly earlier die state than mine, judging from the boldness of the crack on the right side of the M. I also have an EDS VAM 19A that doesn't have a crack at all on the right side of the M, but everything else is there.
When in doubt... don't.
