1902-0 vam 45a in ANACS MS-63 value
what would be a good wholesale value of a 1902-0 vam 45a in MS-63? I am looking at a 2 of them and the prices between them are quite far apart for the same grade. Very confusing.
Re: 1902-0 vam 45a in ANACS MS-63 value
Thanks for the help. I just can't figure out why there is such a big gap in prices for 2 coins that are in 63 and attributed.
Re: 1902-0 vam 45a in ANACS MS-63 value
Phenomenally rotated clash that varies in the extent of letter transfer let alone other features transferred? Some falling into the $2000+ range in MS-63 if I recall properly but could imagine them being much less if they're bland...?
Re: 1902-0 vam 45a in ANACS MS-63 value
So are you suggesting different die states for this particular Vam that would make it less dramatic?
Re: 1902-0 vam 45a in ANACS MS-63 value
There are loads of clashed features on some coins, including letter transfer, but, if I understand the progression of simple die wear, the letter transfer seems to fade quickly; as soon as there's no letter transfer it is not a true 45A anymore. Plus, all of this was polished away forming die #3 of the (regular) VAM-45 series.
Strong letter transfer = higher premium? No/little letter transfer (even with strong other features) = low premium?
Very similar to many, many E clahsed coins (especially many coins attempted to be sold as 1883-O VAM-36As which have a TON of coins with all the features except the E transfer) and the 1890-O VAM-10A coins mostly lacking the comet gouge.
My best guess - but still a guess!

Re: 1902-0 vam 45a in ANACS MS-63 value
Thanks. I don’t think the 45a would fall into that category. I could see if it was found in different grades that the clashing and letter transfer wouldn’t be so strong. These are 2 identical 45a in 63, except that one is in a ANACS and the other is PCGS. There are no other die stages that I know of.
Re: 1902-0 vam 45a in ANACS MS-63 value
What are the prices you are referring to?
When in doubt... don't.
Re: 1902-0 vam 45a in ANACS MS-63 value
There are 2 on eBay back to back ANACS MS 63 for $410 and a NGC MS 63 for $2300.
Re: 1902-0 vam 45a in ANACS MS-63 value
Personally -- and this is just my opinion -- I find the $430 price wildly absurd, which makes the $2300 price wildly absurd X5. Yes it's a Kimpton 12 coin, but it's not on any of the major and more actively pursued VAM "lists", which means it is a tiny niche coin that has a tiny following. I'm a longtime VAM collector, but that coin means nothing to me, and I even had to look it up to see what it is.
When in doubt... don't.

Thanks Dennis. I thought maybe I was going crazy looking at the prices. If you check the SSDC registry that coin goes for $2500. I think things are boing way overboard

As usual, the coin's desirability and how much one is willing to pay varies. It is a wickedly clashed, rotated coin. But it is under rated. If it had made the WOW list. it might have more fans.
That being said, I have had 12 coins cross my hands, all cherry-picked. They are findable if one has patience on Ebay and knows the drop dead die marker, even in terrible Ebay photos.
As far as value, I sold 3 examples together on this site in my collection liquidation a little over a year ago at $450 each, if anyone was paying attention. I think the SSDC price guide for this VAM is over-valued, but I was not consulted.

You answered my question! The prices in there are unrealistic.

Great comments and perspective; I appreciate you sharing them.

Kenny you sold the one in NGC MS63? Did you get close to your asking price?
