F/u on JB's 91-O 1A2 purchase...

Thought I'd post this here as it is related to what it's worth and not general topics...

@messydesk your recent purchase was a GREAT one (http://www.vamworld.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=6899) and one I am admittedly insanely jealous of...

I'm curious to learn about the apparent 'steal' I'm seeing - you bought for $504 (incl BP) yet the SSDC price guide says one of this grade is worth... $2500.

Did you really get that much of deal or is the SSDC guide out of whack? Am I missing something? Quite possible.

Thanks for any clarification/edification...

Gary

That's the coin. But just to clarify...
The coin was identified by PCGS and advertised by Heritage as a VAM 1A (1A1), which the SSDC value guide lists at $400, so John did some sharp cherrypicking on this coin.

There are a few issues with the price guide, and this might be one of them. AU 58 is almost the end of the line for any 91-O VAM 1A. There are a handful graded MS for all die stages combined. I wanted a 58 for my collection, Lloyd's pedigree was a bonus, as was the 1A2 stage. I think the only stage that's worth a considerable bonus in this grade would be 1A3. The pops on VAM 1A2 aren't much lower than 1A1 or 1A4, and this wasn't an intentional cherrypick. Dennis would have better pricing info by die stage.

The 91- 0 vam 1A Die stages 1-4 is a bit tough to value, and IMHO Vam 3A1 & 3a2 Especially,
as POPS are low & many are details grade. All these have fallen off the cliff priceways
and super undervalued IMHO. I am a total fan of these. especially 3A1 & 3a2

Like JB states, au58 is about end of line or Top Pop, for 3A1/2 as well so this helps
validate my Undervalue statement
Im pretty stingy with coin money right now, as im mostly selling not buying, with these
included within a few of my exceptions. I also love 1882 o/s vam 3A clashed U S Obv,
as not many around and AU down

I just want to tell you all I very much appreciate you talking about this coin . I have a 1A1 that I bought on ebay raw . I can almost guarantee it would get a details grade, and might be a 50 at best if it somehow got a straight number . My personal opinion is that these clashed BERT's are some of the coolest mint errors or vams that ever were minted in the series. Congrats on getting the 1A2 in a 58 . Not an easy task.

NNP says you did good , but does not seem to differentiate 1A2 from the other three varieties.

Kinda rude to give JB's 1a2 an "F/U", isn't it??

You were the first to catch this - it did go though my mind it could be interpreted that way. And based on my jealousy of the purchase, it would not be entirely wrong... ;)

Had to laugh at the F/U. Don't those magicians Penn and Teller give out a F/U award on their TV show? (Fool Us trophy)
