1885 Morgan obverse die - not cancelled

Post by Vamhammer » Sun Aug 29, 2021 4:50 am

I know of an 1885 Morgan die obverse only that has not been cancelled (big "X" chiseled ). The owner might be interested in selling and has thrown out a number to me. I have no idea as far as value and I am dying to VAM it. Does anyone know the value or where I could find information? Is the die legal to own in that condition?

I saw Ash's post of his recent ANA purchase of the 1884cc dies that have been cancelled. Any help or opinion on value would be appreciated.

He also has a trade dollar die reverse only "P" that is not cancelled. It has a big chip of steel missing near the rim - talk about a die break!

I’m bumping this up because I’m interested to know if it is legal to own Morgan dies that are not cancelled.

Sorry for the poor picture quality - all I had was my cell phone and it had a plexiglass cover protecting the die.
Nice die break going through the "N" in UNUM. Couple of die gouges at "P" and "U" in plur. I was pretty excited to actually see it! Now for the big question - what VAM is it?

Hi and welcome to VW.

Hate to tell you but that is a fake die.
The fonts are puffy and the date is off as well.

Gouges in the letters "P" and "U" along with the large break at the back of hair.

The denticles look like crap as well.
Don't buy it.

According to 18 USC 25 §487:
Whoever, without lawful authority, makes any die, hub, or mold, or any part thereof, either of steel or plaster, or any other substance, in likeness or similitude, as to the design or the inscription thereon, of any die, hub, or mold designated for the coining or making of any of the genuine gold, silver, nickel, bronze, copper, or other coins coined at the mints of the United States; or

Whoever, without lawful authority, possesses any such die, hub, or mold, or any part thereof, or permits the same to be used for or in aid of the counterfeiting of any such coins of the United States—

Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than fifteen years, or both.
So it sounds like its worth up to 15 years plus fines and court costs.
