1880 VAM 8 Ears

Post by Dirtdoctor » Thu Jul 08, 2021 11:53 am

Ironic that I came here back to back with the same request for 1880 V8, not 1880 S V8. Found this coin in group of Morgans I previously could not or did not assign a VAM. Possibly because the ears are more subtle than I anticipated. The coin has unfortunately seen some strong cleaning. I superimposed the ears from the VAMWorld image over the picture of mine to verify it is a valid assignment. Perfect fit. The reverse PUP "wing scratches" match as well. Quite a pleasant surprise, despite the cleaning. Would be interested in its value. Thanks.

For added assurance, attached are the wing scratch overlays, with 2 different opacities. I know these are really tuff and ears are "soft" so thought I'd add these. Top pic is mine, second has overlay of VAMWorld pic at 86% opacity of the overlay, and third has it at 24% so you can see thru better to compare scratches are in correct location.

If it is cleaned it better be really desirable to have any value.

I just don't really see the "ears". I know there are hints of them in your overlay, but I just don't see them as ears. I do see the gouge in the wing, and that seems to match with the correct PUP. But without the ears I don't think any TPG is going to attribute it... details or otherwise. :(
When in doubt... don't.

I appreciate your honest feedback. Maybe I'm trying to hard to see the ears. Mainly that's because not just one but both back wing scratches (PUPs) match perfectly, and I see small bumps at the locations of both the ears. Small and not pronounced, but in the correct location. Following are a series of decreasing opacity overlays of the VAMWorld example laid on top of mine.
