1878-S VAM-77

Post by jmangham » Sun Oct 25, 2020 8:57 pm

This was in a coworker's box of old coins he asked me to go through for him. I thought for sure it was 111. I emailed the pics to Ash in March and he attributed it for me. The mint mark position is what gives it away. Is it worth sending to NGC? What are these selling for in this condition? Thanks folks!

Getting in it an attributed holder is everything and PCGS Registry folks consistently pay the most for PCGS holdered & attributed coins.

That said (and although VAM 77 is legitimately rare) it is one of 3 different VAMs (along with 6 and 22) that fill the same slot in the Super Set... and 6 and 22 are much less expensive. That's my way of saying 77 is more of a specialist's coin, which may make it slower to sell.

Here are the handful of sales results I have:
1878-S 77 25 PCGS Aug-18 H $480
1878-S 77 25 PCGS Oct-15 E $385
1878-S 77 20 PCGS May-20 PP $600
1878-S 77 20 PCGS Jul-18 H $432
1878-S 77 12 NGC Sep-17 H $180
1878-S 77 10 PCGS Dec-19 PP $500
1878-S 77 10 PCGS May-14 E $407
1878-S 77 8 NGC Oct-19 DL $103
When in doubt... don't.

I am a member of NGC. I wonder if it would be worth it to go with PCGS just for this one coin?

I'd accept it raw, I don't mind.

An easy and the least expensive way to get a coin graded by PCGS is to send the coin to JB @messydesk to include in his group submission. He will include his VSS attribution label. But it will not have the PCGS attribution, just the grade.

Here is a link to a thread about his group submission. I send my coins to him for the group submission.

You are better off with it in an ANACS holder and properly attributed.
