1897-O $1 PCGS AU-53 VAM-6A
Re: 1897-O $1 PCGS AU-53 VAM-6A
From the given information there may be a large spread.
If the listed break looks closer to a cracked VAM-6, it my not bring as much as one that almost looks like a VAM-6B.
Last I looked there were only two 6Bs in the SSDC census. Mine was the low one.
But I have one.

I guess it depends on which registry you are asking about.
There are 14 AU 97-O VAM-6As in the SSDC census. I wouldn't think that there is much, if any. premium on a 6A.
But I could be wrong,
The real WOW factor is in the big break of the 6B.

Rob wrote the WOW book.
Maybe he could give us his opinion on the 97-O VAM-6A.

I'm not one to assign any values, but I'll throw my two cents in the mix.
Cracked VAM-6's are pretty common, but once you get to "legit" broke VAM-6a they get pretty scarce and close to or at VAM-6b they are VERY rare.
So if you ask me if a nice late VAM-6a should carry a premium I say of course, it's a really cool VAM, but if you ask if it actually does and how much premium we are talking about I'm gonna punk out and say that's for the buyer and seller to figure out.

I go totally NUTS for WOW! VAMs!! Or is that from WOW! VAMs?
Re: 1897-O $1 PCGS AU-53 VAM-6A
I agree with Rob.
So does the 6A you are asking about look more like a 6, or as Rob mentioned, is it a legit broke 6A that is close to a 6B?
@impairedsquirrel
Thanks for your comments Rob.

I do not own it - the dealer is an immovable object in price ? and no one is willing to throw out a figure :/
Terrible pictures to be able to tell for sure but
6A is what it looks like to me - Star is not too distinct but looks like a B is possible

I bought as he has a good return policy.
Better pictures when it arrives

Ever since you started this thread I held off replying because I thought you were talking about my PCGS-53 VAM 6A that is currently running in a Heritage auction. Here is a photo of the key crack area, which I think is getting pretty close to 6B territory:
When in doubt... don't.

Dennis, that is a legit 6a, but it still has some life to reach 6b. If memory serves, I think the one in the book is just slightly more advanced than this, but still pre-6b. Your stage is where I'd call them desirable, at least to me.
The OP coin looks earlier from what I can see, but will wait for better pics...

Okay I did not bother wasting my time taking pictures as
Its already on the way back to the seller.
That being said the coin looked more like the coin in the coin designated "still a VAM-6 not yet a 6A picture.
on the 6A page.
Thanks and good luck @DHalladay on your auction

Re: 1897-O $1 PCGS AU-53 VAM-6A
This is the most advanced problem-free coin in the 6A-6B family I ever had the opportunity to acquire. In my experience, VAM 6 aren't hard, VAM 6A are very few and far between, and the only 6B I've ever seen is in the photos on the VAMworld attribution page.
When in doubt... don't.
