1878 VAM 14.11

Post by miscolm » Sat Jul 28, 2018 4:58 am

I am a new member of VAMWORLD. I previously just read the blogs, and this is my first post. I am looking for an 1878 VAM 14.11 (Top 100) rarity. The sales of this rarity are few and far between. Is a 14.11 harshly cleaned valued in AU condition (attributed and graded by PCGS) worth about the same as a F12 with a CAC sticker attributed and graded by PCGS? Any thoughts would be of help, and approximate values would help too. Unfortunately, I cannot provide pictures as the coins are not in my possession.

Hi and Welcome;
First and foremost, this is MY opinion. Info like this is always open to discussion.
A coin is only worth what a person is willing to pay for it. That being said, a V14.11 is a desirable VAM(IN ANY CONDITION!).
VAM View price guide says that AU is $8500, being a 'details' holder would easily drop price by 50% or more. VAM View says that VF is $4500, so that in my OPINION means that a Fair 12 could be around $3000-$3500. A CAC sticker only appeals to certain buyers(I'm not one of them, so it means NOTHING to me).
Here is some sale numbers from the old VAM site)
NGC MS64* Heritage $23,[[tel:500 2/7/2016|500 2/7/2016]]
SEGS CLEANED MS61, JULY 2001 EBAY sale $7101.00
PCGS AU55 sold on eBay for over $15,000 in 2008
Hope I was able to help and not make it worse! ...kenny
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my.........Ahh........Uhmm........something, something, something.....

Welcome to the mayhem!

14.11 is one of the truly "Wow! You have one of those?!" VAMs. They are seldom offered for sale in any grade and are always expensive.

That said, the VAM market has softened a lot since the Great Recession. And as one who helped produce the old VAMview price guides, I would urge great caution when looking at those value estimates. I argued often with the main author that the prices were too high then, which means in virtually all cases today they are much too high now.

Harsh cleaning, especially really nasty harsh cleaning, is among the worst of all problems that a coin can have. But being in a PCGS holder helps. And "AU details" can understate things greatly. Is it AU50 details or AU58 details? There's a big difference and it will affect the value.

Without seeing the coin, but assuming the worst in terms of harshness, and assuming AU55 details rather than AU50 details, I would guess a value in today's market of around $4,500.
When in doubt... don't.

Welcome to VAMWorld. We like to keep discussion of pricing off the discussion board. There is a forum "What's it Worth?" that I created for threads like this. I'm moving this topic there.
Welcome to the VAMWorld 2.0 discussion boards. R.I.P. old VAMWorld.
