1885 P VAM 8

Post by Swimksmith23 » Thu Jan 24, 2019 3:33 am

Hi just curious what this vam is worth. I received an email from PCGS confirming that it is the correct designation making it the only one. This is the email confirming it was not just a mechanical error:

And here is a picture of the coin itself:

It graded as a MS 62. Just curious what kind of value this coin has. Thanks for the help! If it is worth it, I might send it back in for restoration, but it might not be worth the fees.

I know you said PCGS population of VAM-8 is 1. That may sound very rare.
However, VAM-8 is no longer an official listing. It is the same as VAM-22. The SSDC population is 57.
Of those 57, 44 are graded either MS-62 or higher.
Hopefully someone with sale data can give you some information on cost for your coin.

My ANACS MS62 VAM-8 cost me $100.00 last year off of the bay.

Mitch Hill is the man to ask.

Your coin is a VAM 22. VAM 8 has been eliminated. PCGS is going to be working on improving their varieties department this year, according to the new boss. Their letter seems to confirm that they called it what they called it, not that it's what it is.

Always fun to see someone use piss poor attributing from a "respected" grading company to attempt to swell their own pockets... even after an explanation was given here.
Good luck selling something that doesn't exist. :?

Just to clarify, yeah i put it up on ebay at an exorbitant price to see what interest if any a label error will generate; the price will fall over time of course. I don't see what the uproar is over trying to determine market value of an item with an error on the label making it one of a kind even if the VAM is not one of a kind. It still is the only one labeled as VAM 8 making it unique in that regard. Clearly the VAM community as a whole is well versed in what they are collecting and would be aware of the fact that VAM 8 and 22 are essentially the same thing. The question is what would you pay as a mark up, if any, for a mislabel from a major company, especially if you are putting together an extensive collection of morgans and want a piece no one else will have or be able to register. So we will see if anyone would be willing to pay up or if it just will hold the same value which in this grade would probably be 100-150 I believe. I included the note from PCGS to demonstrate that it was not just a error on the label printer, it was from the graders themselves. Plus I like the designation myself and would want to just keep it myself unless I was offered a good amount above market value, thus the price. Those are just my thoughts on the matter. I apologize I was not very clear.

I'd be willing to bet there are many PCGS VAM-8's. They just removed the VAM-8 from their census because it doesn't exist.

Just to help simplify/clarify: Neither the vam 8 -now 22 are worth a premium over regular 1885
Also the Vam designation- v8 by PCGS makes no premium- in general- unless one bidder out
of 5000 decides its neat LOL

In short impaired squirrel is correct - the wording might be a bit tough on a less experienced vammer

Most 1885 in general dont command a premium
