1888-O VAM 12a - First post, be gentle

Post by FistfullofSD » Sun May 28, 2023 2:38 am

Hey everyone, joined up recently and super excited to have people to chat with about my hobby/obsession. So thank you all in advance for the help and knowledge I know I’ll gain. Only hope I can contribute and pay it back as I get better at this.

So first of many I want to ask for some guidance on is an 1888-O graded 64 that I believe is a VAM 12a. Can someone confirm I got it right and if possible give me an idea of if there is any premium for this variety?

Thanks so much apologies for the photos not being great I’m still working on those skills.

Welcome (especially because of the interesting 'be gentle' request). You are, indeed, welcome here!

The 88-O series is fun and frustrating one. I'm sure you've seen the http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compu ... bution_101 general page to help, and you've seen the http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compu ... 888-O_VAMs page specific to 1888-O varieties.

In order for us to help, though, you'd need to provide much more detailed pictures according to the guidelines. I'd also post this in the general Discussion board and not here until you figure out what it is!

Welcome to the site and the mania...

Thanks for the reply! My pictures are far more detailed but seems they got reduce my like 90% when I posted them. Is there some guidance you can give or link to explain on uploading full resolution images?

Sorry for another post on this but if I understand correctly how, I can post a link to a public site such as google drive with the full resolution images? I would share as public link accessible to anyone with the link. I would also itemize the variety attributions to support my belief a coin is a specific VAM. I frequently visit and study the Sites you shared and find them to be the only comprehensive database and method for confirming VAM attributions, so hope to hear I’ve been doing it right. As long as the google drive link is ok to use, I’ll repost with all the details mentioned and put things to the test. Thank you again and btw, my name is Seth should anyone care to address me by something other than the username I created.
Hope everyone is having a great Memorial Day weekend and thank anyone here that served for their service.

Welcome aboard! As gently as possible, I'm afraid I have to tell you that 12a is excessively common and carries no premium.
I go totally NUTS for WOW! VAMs!! Or is that from WOW! VAMs?

If it's not a 12A, however, it might be worth a lit'l more...

Keilg1 and group,

Many thanks for the thoughtful and gentle replies. For clarity, no need to be gentle with letting me down on incorrectly identifying the VAM or value. Just hoping for some patience guiding me on how the site works and best practices. You have my permission to bust my chops like an old friend and will help me feel comfortable given the banter with my long time buddies.

If I could please ask:

1) What is the right way to share photos in full resolution e.g. can I use a google drive link I make public to anyone who has it?

2) what is the correct VAM based on pictures shared by uploading here, if that’s possible given the low res version that created

3) Will it rub anyone the wrong way if this newb posts a number of other questions on other coins I think I nailed it having trouble dialing in?

Many thanks again and hope I don’t upset anyone as I fumble in the dark for the light switch. Just remember it’s not my intent and look forward to getting set straight with some friendly sarcasm if I do.

Sorry for the delayed response to the thoughtful replies, I’ve had little time to feed the obsession beast while looking for a new job the past month. Hoping to land soon and get back to being more active.

Seth

While I can’t answer the first two questions I can answer the third one. As long as you don’t spam questions or topics and just give them a week or three to marinate before you start a new one you should not have a problem. :D
I plan to collect VAMs and maybe discover new ones, but until then I'm just here. Don't forget this is a live and learn hobby have fun with it.

The wiki that VAMworld uses limits photos to a maximum size of 1200 pixels wide or tall, which is why you can't post huge images. Contact @messydesk for more details.
When in doubt... don't.
