1892 S VAM?

Post by Vamj » Sat Oct 02, 2021 11:55 pm

I have a 1892 S morgan I'm trying to attribute
I m new and wander if it's better to have pcgs grade it for me it looks like a XF. Not sure have lots of pictures. I read the 101 and not sure we're to go from here. I noticed and pictured the the date it I'm sure it's to the far right if I counted the denticles right not sure what the date thing is though. The MM "S" is tilted to the right and high. Also I noticed some possible letters or numbers under the 1 and 9 in-between the denticles from my scope. I'm not sure what die cracks or other is a little doubling on the sherifs design. I just noticed a like die deteration on the stars around E-pluribus * unum and date I'm used to lincoln cents pennies. Please help maybe, some pointers will help. I got plenty of pictures just ask and I will post. How did I do?

Have you compared your coin to each of the known 1892-S VAMs on their attribution pages? There aren't very many different VAMs, so looking at each of them is what I'd do.

When in doubt... don't.

Attribute so I'm sending it
To pcgs it is expensive though
I hope it's worth it.

PCGS does not attribute all VAMs, only a relative handful... and even then you have to tell them which one it is.
When in doubt... don't.

Usually when supplied with good photos, the VAM can be attributed correctly on VW.
It would be good if you made a post on the discussion board with photos.

I can't see anything from all of those links.
It would still be nice to see the photos of your coin. Someone here could likely help you with an attribution.

Clear close up photos of the date and mm locations would help. But from what I see on your photos, my guess is that you have a VAM-10.

The area under E and PL in front of Liberty's hair/forehead/nose, and the area between the back of Liberty's head/cap/hair and UM & the two stars show glaring evidence of cleaning lines... and pretty harsh ones at that.
When in doubt... don't.

You would have saved yourself a lot of time and money if you had asked the people here first. Nobody here would have sent that coin for grading. We all have made mistakes similar to yours, and learned to seek advice first.

I’m not really understanding what you are saying about VAM-10 shares the likeness of VAM-2 which is in top 100. The date locations are very different.
