Does a Polling attachment on a post require maintenance?

I have read that the 'polling attachment thingy' requires a dedicated maintenance?

There's no "polling attachment." You create a poll by filling out the options on the "Poll Creation" tab (next to Options and Attachments) when you first create the topic. You can change them by editing the first post in the topic, which contains your poll.
