My first pick of the new year
My first pick of the new year
I found this one- a very high grade for a 1901 (probably AU-55 to maybe AU-58). I noticed it was a Vam 5 too . This is probably the highest grade for a raw 1901 which I've seen in doing this over 10 years. Coin looks like it was dipped but I think she will grade. Tell me what you think.
Re: My first pick of the new year
From the pictures, I don't see anything specific precluding a grade. Nice pick!

Thanks John.
Maybe I will send this one down your way for the next PCGS submission.

Not bad. Def looks gradeable, and a slider. Tough to tell if there's rub from the pics. Have you done the "white paper" test? Sweet score. Throw her in the next bulk!

Chris
I'm not familiar with the "white paper test". Please explain how one does it, and what you are looking for. Thanks.

Kenny lit today, fam... 100!
Sorry, been following a lot of college recruiting news lately.
Oh, and NICE find Jim! It looks a bit "off", but I (strangely) see lots of AU 01-Ps that look iffy in good holders.

@messydesk can explain the paper test better than I. Pretty simple though. You just hold the coin on the rim on top of white printer paper in direct light. Look at the eagles breast/wing tips and hair above ear/above eye/high cheek (the high points) if circulated you'll see that those high points are dark, if BU you'll see no darkness (maybe a little from bag rub but not much) great for telling which side of the isle weakly struck sliders lay..

Re: My first pick of the new year
The "white paper" test is pretty much as Chris described. The first place I look for the dark gray is the tip of the bust on the obverse. I'll try to take and post some pictures sometime. This coin looks to be a no-question AU. Squirrel's concern about it looking "off" don't bother me here. The two shots of the full con make it look like a solid AU55. 1901 has such poor quality -- bad luster, bad strike, lousy surfaces -- that if it's attractive, something's probably wrong.
