odd polishing (?) on 1881-O

Post by DHalladay » Tue Dec 25, 2018 6:01 pm

Hi everyone!
Here's a photo of an 1881-O in PCGS DMPL that a friend is looking at buying. He asked what the vertical stuff is on the left side of the coin. I'm not sure what it is. Does anyone else have any ideas?

hard to tell on these photos but we had some VAM 28s early on that had odd swirls on them. JB at first thought this might be from grease left on the die, but later had some different thoughts.

If you look under the eagle's right wing on this coin http://www.1881o.com/25689508_65dm_28.html you will see some white swirls. These appear on almost all the high grade coins for VAM 28 (PL/DMPL). To me it almost looks like a frosting that might have come from some acid, but very difficult to tell.

If you can determine the VAM we might be able to do some comparison for similar marks.

I assume it straight graded, so PCGS didn't have any qualms with it, let alone giving it a full DMPL designation.

That isn't an end-all though. PMD that would otherwise details a coin does slip through from time to time. Even extreemly obvious PMD. I'd really like to see this one in hand as it isn't quite the typical manifestation of what we would assume a segregated, solitary polishing event looks like. That said, it does not look too "out of bounds" and while the pics could be better I'm not seeing it go over the devices. My guess is that it was one of the first coins struck after that area was treated. The cloudy white "halo" probably wore away after a few dozen or so strikings. Just a guess..

Could it be damage on the planchet that didn't strike out?
