1926 S Peace Dollar with heavy file lines in the hair

Post by Raybob15239 » Sun Dec 09, 2018 12:49 am

Back in 2006, I had a couple of silver dollar bezels and decided that I wanted to have some "numismatic" ornaments on my Christmas tree. I went to a local shop and went "dumpster diving" in the junk bucket and found a decent Peace Dollar and Morgan Dollar that had already been ruined by polishing and bough them for about $7 or 8 each.

This year, as I was decorating the tree, I came across the ornaments and realized that I never really looked at the coins. Having run out of things to look at, I put them under the scope. The Morgan was a plain Jane VAM 1. The Peace Dollar... well, that was different. there were heavy file lines in the hair, at the top of the head and into the E and R. The biggest were in the area where the bun meets the head. I checked the 26S listings and saw nothing like it. Closest thing is VAM 3U, but there is no crack. The possibility that this might be unlisted and the fact that this coin had been destroyed by polishing made me throw up in my mouth a little...

Anyway, here are some pics. Is this something that should go to LVA and given that it is a damaged coin from the polishing, should it?

Here is the full obverse shot. Hopefully, @davidkclose , @vampicker or one of the other Darksiders (@colwillys) will check in and offer an opinion?

I would venture to say VAM 3R or VAM 3S . Photos not good for me to give you a good read on your coin .

There were no photos on those VAM pages to compare to. That is the main reason I posted. Hopefully someone will have the photos or the coins to post pics that I can compare against. Thanks!

Ray, I looked in the Wonders book and could not find photo's for either 3R or 3S, both were discovered in 2012 and my book was published in 2013. Does yours have a medium high S? It's odd the both 3R and 3S have the same verbiage. Might be something you could send to LVA if you can't get it sorted out and have him pin it down and revise or clarify between the 2. Hope that made sense? :?

Thanks, colwillys! I really appreciate you providing the photos.

After comparing the coin to the 3S and 3R photos, I am pretty confident that this is not 3S or 3R. The file lines are going a different direction. I think that this one might be new. Now the big question is whether LVA will work from polished coins as opposed to just cleaned coins. The polishing affects the fields but does not impact the file lines.
