1878-S VAM 8.1 discussion
Obv. die was used on V28
For V8.1:
1) EDS IS 2-sided PL; die crack already exists from the neck to the denticles
2) Dies clashed; very noticeable on reverse; clash marks at both wreath sides, and clashing goes up thru 'n' yet OBV just has solid line in front of neck (no letter transfer)
3) REV die only polished getting rid of the majority of clash marks; very noticeable die polish lines and essentially PL; NO chip at E on rev. Clash mark in front of neck still exists.
4)LDS, no trace of clash line in front of neck; chip at E on reverse.
OBV retired, new die created V8.2; EDS is OBV PL only; pitted and polished LDS becomes V8A

1878 clashers are really special in my thinking, but as
always i hate all the confusing die configuration stuff,
as it simply adds frustrating details to a already to many
PUPS venue
What ever happened to SIMPLE VAMMING? IMHO

Best guess I can offer being new to this, would be lots and lots of studying , by very diligent folks . Thirsty for knowledge! . Knowledge is? Well you should know the answer to that one . It's not the same game as trading baseball cards fresh out of a bubblegum wrapper when you were a child ,and many were probably taught basic skills watching Sesame Street in the 70's ,There was even that song with every episode .

Every collector is different. Newer collectors should keep it simple and start with a well-known list or 78 8TF before. Rappel slowly down the rabbit hole.

This differs from the statement on the VAM 8 page that all 8.2 are VAM 8A. As is well known, I have a distaste for this "Die 2" stuff, as it makes things unnecessarily confusing. I fixed it for 78 7TF last year to make it easier to follow (other than having to relearn a few numbers). Should I do the same for 78-S this year? 8, 36, 43, 47, 78, 86, 103 could all use makeovers in that department.vamnuke wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2023 7:06 pmObv. die was used on V28

Re: 1878-S VAM 8.1 discussion
What I need to do is pull my die 2 & 8A specimens from the box. I have one a PL OBV example of a die 2. To me 8A has a lot more wing / leg area polishing plus the “rough” wing texture you don’t see on die 1 coins.messydesk wrote: ↑Sat Sep 30, 2023 5:19 amThis differs from the statement on the VAM 8 page that all 8.2 are VAM 8A. This is trivial stuff, but iMO THE SF minted hated those dreaded clash marks and promptly cleaned up, but it looks like they cleaned up the reverse then got rid of the obv line. I was also trying to figure out how ‘ when the chip on the reverse E occurred. My guess is the clash weakened the reverse die and occurred when the dies were placed back in service after the obv neck clash line was cleaned up.

Big undertaking; 1G, 51 & 63 are currently split, too.

So is that a "Yes, please" vote?

Re: 1878-S VAM 8.1 discussion
YES Please! I realize there is a load of work involved but I - like you - really do not like the multiple die pairs for a VAM & I would like to see them all dealt with. Starting here is a great plan! After the change is made on VAMworld - I will fix the registry to reflect the new changes.
Have a great day!
Re: 1878-S VAM 8.1 discussion
Very well. I'll come up with a proposal and run it by the 78-S folks.

Re: 1878-S VAM 8.1 discussion
The first draft of the 1878-S makeover is out for review by a couple 78-S specialists. I've already made changes to the VAM 36 mess to reflect what the actual die pairs are. Dead links on the 78-S page are placeholders. More of those to come, too.
