1901-O, VAM 13

Post by MarkyB » Thu Sep 28, 2023 7:50 pm

This was my first attempt at VAMing a toned coin, as I like 'em frosty white, and I didn't like the experience. I cherry-picked it as a double berry as I didn't have one. Date obviously slanted but that's really all the obverse revealed. This VAM is all about the reverse. I initially didn't think the Bar-O was significant enough to mention. Wrong. The doubling on the eagles head made me get out another 1901-O for comparison. Wow is it drastic! The upper arrowhead is etched, unlike my other 1901-O. Pics:

Attributing a toned coin is a little bit harder at least for me . Personal victories on one that is harder almost makes the experience itself just a little bit sweeter . I am so out of my league on this forum , I started about 30 or 40 years behind most of the members here , maybe more . However I always wanted to do this . I use to dream about buying an old bank roll of Morgans . That might sound weird but it is true ... I have so much to learn . I still only know a handful of VAMs by heart . 5 or 6 thousand coins is a lot to digest . I don't know what the future holds . but I would dare take a guess that the number of amateur collectors like me are legion . Thanks for sharing

Nice but @MarkyB, without a picture of the date this is impossible to truly nail down. VAM-13 does not have a near date...

I did not look last night, I was tired ... 3 plate photos and 1 coin LFCP on the v-13 page . A date picture would be handy and also one of the cap fold . it looks like he has the reverse headed in the right direction , and it's hard to say about the date for sure without The DPIS type of listing included ...sometimes the pages on the wiki are spot on and sometimes they can be confusing @MarkyB

Uh oh. Guess I better break it out again. Pictures should be posted in a few hours. Isn't it the only Bar-O?

Going through the big list this morning it was the only one I saw . I could not find another candidate. however the die study says
it is not complete . and that makes it a possible treasure hunt and I just can't help myself

I just need the practice , so not making any claims ..... but Gary made a valid point so I thought we should look

It's not a near. Good catch and my apologies for posting wrong info. I'll correct the original post. @keilg1
