1878-S VAM 1B observations

Post by vamnuke » Tue Sep 19, 2023 12:51 am

So, VAM 1B appears to have a few different t die states; the EDS is essentially unpitted with very visible lines at the leg / wing gap. Later the reverse die got pitted. The official listing states the reed count is different between the early die state and the pitted version. However, it appears to me that the pitted die was re-polished, leaving an over-polished obverse 'm' plus some neat diagonal die polish lines below the date. Also, the reverse diagonal die polish lines become nearly indistinct and there is less pitting. I'm not sure if that amounts to anything, but thought I'd post. The attached photos show the normal pitted reverse and the re-polished dies. The re-polished die is very close to 2-sided PL.
