Fun Find: 1921-D VAM-1U

Post by ChrisPaulis » Mon Sep 11, 2023 5:21 pm

Today I received this coin I had bought at auction and was thrilled to discover it was VAM-1U -- the longest gouge in the 21-D series and on the WOW! list. (I also cherry-picked a 1921-S VAM-6A MS64 for WAY under Greysheet).

It really is a neat VAM.

The VAM-1AL is an evil mimic cousin. Saw one in Pittsburgh at the ANA. The mimic is not an issue if you have the image of the VAM-1U gouge. But when going without resources, one could easily pick up a 1AL (still a good VAM) thinking it is a 1U.

Congrats on your acquisition!

I agree with John; 1U is a very cool (and scarce) VAM, especially in EDS when the gouge is obvious. They are known in high grades, too, although I once passed passed up making a 'pick on a badly overpriced PCGS MS64... as if generic MS64s aren't already overpriced to begin with.
When in doubt... don't.
