1880 VAM?

Post by lhnumis1 » Mon Aug 28, 2023 12:55 am

The subject coin does not seem to match any VAM. Closest were VAM 38 and VAM 48...but no match is noted. All thoughts welcome...

Take a look at the other PUPS on VAM-28. Maybe a pre-clashed example.

The die marker under the cap fold and the threadlike impression at the bottom the eagle's left wing are absent in the subject coin. I ruled out VAM 28 previously for lack of these markers and the lack of a triple '0'. The subject coin exhibits only a doubled '0'. The reverse appears free of substantive markers with exception of the two polishing lines in the image above. There are some fine polishing lines at the left, right and bottom of the upper tail feathers and some in the lower tail feathers but only the lines at the bottom, in the left leg gap & one line in the lower tail feathers can be resolved with my jury rigged setup. There are no lines in the right leg gap...see image below.
Thanks for the response rhodes6467!

Hello! Take a peek at V85. The coin on the V85 is a little later stage where the die chip has appeared on the first "8" of the date, between the loops on the right side.

Thanks! My first thought was a V28 also, but when grabbed a few V28 and V28A's to check, I realized that wasn't it. I knew I recognized it so started looking at a few others, I found a match in my V85's. Something else I just realized, the VAM-28 and the VAM-83 are the same. VAM-83 should be an easy kill.

Looks correct for the obverse. With enough squinting the reverse might be right too. The VAM page reverse image is kind of poor...below find a reverse image that though not great provides a bit more detail. Thanks guys for the help!
