Something to Share

Post by LateDateMorganGuy » Sat Aug 26, 2023 7:47 pm

So my brother passed about 5 years ago. My sister-in-law is still going thru the house trying to empty it to get ready to sell and downsize. She lives in SF Bay area. But the kicker is she had two uncles who worked for the Bank of Reno. In the early sixties they started to put aside silver dollars that went thru their bank. Likely they pulled them out of change for $1.

She has a Capital Plastic holder in the shape of Nevada with holes for all the CC Morgans. All the holes are filled, including the 89-CC. She claims it belongs to her brother but she won't give it to him due his life story. She won't let me buy it from her either. I saw it and graded the coins a very long time ago. All the CC dollars were circulated. I forget what I told her what I thought it was worth.

So fast forward to now. She sent me 36 circulated Morgans in old white paper 2x2 holders. They appear to be marked with a grade that apparently one of the uncles wrote on it, with a price in red, circled. The pricing does not appear to match early 1960s so not sure when that was done. Thought this was interesting. Here are two examples.

Looks like it might be fun to go thru. Love the apparent un-messed with original look on these two

Thanks for sharing the coins and back story. One of my keepsakes is an 1886 P Morgan from my parents. It remains in the old "picture frame" 2x2 with the $2 price written on the corner.

Yeah, I need to give the 80-P V13 a bath and look at it again. Stay tuned.

Well, after the bath, the 1880-P is not a VAM-13. It sure looked like it could be under a loupe. But keep in mind I have it at VF-20, so determinig the actual VAM is really not possible. The reverse markers for the VAM-13 were just not there. It is headed for the bargain bucket at my local B&M, as are all the rest of the 35 coins.

That's too bad. I was excited to hear about your find even if it didn't work out. Thanks and sorry!
