1880-P Help needed

Post by fogie » Fri Aug 25, 2023 5:35 pm

Anyone know this one? The coin is not in the best condition but the die gouge in the hair below the LI of LIBRRTY is really bold and strikes me as THE pup for this. I still have not been able to nail it down.

(This last one made me doubletake on the VAM-74 but it is not a match for my ANACS VAM-74...)
Have a great day!

Hello Brent! Yes, I recognize this one. I sent my coin in to VSS a little while ago because I couldn't find a match for it either. It came back as a VAM-40. As you probably know, the 80-P VAM-40 had a "dubious" listing but I don't believe this is actually a VAM-40 though. I have a coin which I think is a much better match to the V40 listing. The doubling on the profile and stars is much more evident on my coin that I believe is actually a V40. I am going to send these to Messydesk and ask his opinion on these.

I'm also planning on sending a couple other "Dubious" listed coins and a coin with earlier use of the V33 obverse die and a unlisted reverse that is very cracked up. It might be the most shattered 80-P die I've seen. I'll also send in the supporting V33/V33A/v33B/V24/V24A supporting coins for comparision.

Brent

Great letter providing the historical provenance of the Vam 131 proof. The coin is obviously awesome too.
Thanks for sharing.

I look forward to hearing how this turns out!

Hi Brent! I just wanted to give you an update on this coin. I finally sent my VSS submission in and I received them back what seemed almost instantly (Thanks John!) John is going to see if the discovery coin is available and verify if possible that this is the correct identification, but I think this coin will stand as the V40.
I also sent the coin I thought might been a better candidate for a V40 and John correctly noted, while the doubling on the profile and stars were a better match, my coin also exhibited additional doubling on the top of the 2nd "8" that did not fit the V40 description. My coin had a pincer "8" and I think Leroy would have noted that doubling. That coin is now the new V98. I will try and get some photos up soon. I think the new V98 is a pretty interesting coin.
