1889-O possible clashed E. "false alarm" and it was PMD Back from VSS

Post by johnhenry9009 » Wed Aug 23, 2023 1:58 pm

So I was looking through my friends collection like a week ago and I found what appears to be a 1889-O VAM-6 with remnants of an E. I am probably wrong but there is hoping.

I see the mark but I do not see it as a remnant of an E. Sorry
Have a great day!

Agree. Nothing on the front would indicate the potential 'E' transfer on the reverse but the low clash line along the bottom left wreath leaves suggests it might have been possible. Still nice to ask about because that would have been a wickedly cool find!

The obverse is inconsequential
Whale back and eye are visibly apparent
Send it to JR for in hand assesment

Unfortunately I can not send it in as it is not mine but will do my best to send it in if given the chance. :)

Yes, you said (I'd look at the 89-O again, possible clashed E on that one.)

I'm thinking its pmd. Definitely tantalizing though. I've chased a few of these myself, and the best feedback I got was to compare the clash of the coin in question to overlays for location of E with respect to other aspects of the counterclash.

Looking at the 0-degree rotation clash in the overlay - the E on this one appears to be too low and close to the bow, and probably angled too much counterclockwise. The neck clash over the wing and the profile alignment with the wreath of yours suggests maybe a -2 degrees rotation of the reverse, but if you look at the -5 degrees rotation, the E-clash should be even higher and to the left, so a bit more unlikely. Check the link in Vamworld - my screen capture below gets to fuzzy, but gives an idea of a resource to look at.

Just my two bits. Nice coin.

Rotation is closer to -3/4
Your depiction on overlay has the cap clash way to high

I hope it is a new E reverse. Good Luck!

Unfortunately, it is not a new E rev. it just had a PMD scratch that I would have discovered if I had looked closer, the same thing happened to the 1882-S that I thought had two parallel Die gouges.
But you live and you learn but it is still a VAM-6

I've enjoyed a large number of learning events in the past... grease-related, scratch-related, machine doubling-related, toning fallacies, and more...

Usually the benefit corresponds to the amount I paid for the learning lesson. Hope yours was relatively cheap as it wan't your coin?!

Keep looking, though. There are multiple DCs to be found!
