1921-S VAM-1BJ2 or something else?
This coin has the distinctive markers of the dot between DO and the gouge right of the wreath bow, but in many other ways it differs from the VW photos and has a strange curving line at the neck-chin gap. The scribbles in the eagle's tail are distinctively different. Is this a different VAM? I don't see any other with the DO dot.

It's definitely a 1BJ-something in my opinion. But without the heavy die file lines shown on the attribution page I don't see how this can be a 1BJ2:

That leaves 1BJ and 1BJ3. Does you coin have die files lines at PLURIBUS? If not, I'd have to go with 1BJ3.

When in doubt... don't.

Sure enough. It's 1BJ3. No die file lines and has the diagonal lines in LIBERTY. Do you think the curving line at the chin/neck is a strikethrough?

Yes, strike-through was my first reaction.ChrisPaulis wrote: ↑Wed Aug 16, 2023 9:59 pmSure enough. It's 1BJ3. No die file lines and has the diagonal lines in LIBERTY. Do you think the curving line at the chin/neck is a strikethrough?
And immediately below the bottom right of your red circle I see evidence of a very old clash line at the neck. I'll bet there is also a faint vertical line coming up from the top of the eagle's right wing toward the N in IN. My 1BJ3 has all of the features you have shown (except the strike-though), BTW.
Here's a shot of the scribbles:

Here's the area between the right wing and the n... Is this what you refer to?

That's it.
Your coin is a later die state than mine, because it has weaker neck and wing clashes. Yours does also have a filled-G, like mine:
