SF Morgan reverse die just sold

Post by vampicker » Wed Aug 16, 2023 12:16 pm

Took a shot a bidding on this but c'est la vie. I looked at it in hand at the ANA. I wasn't able to tie it to a specific VAM, but check out the damage from apparently repeated contact with the collar on the edge of the die. There's reeding almost all the way around the business end.

Condemned new twitter account?

I love what they did prior to the x…

I saw a David Carr privately made, slabbed, over struck Morgan go for over 200 last week at auction, never seen one in the aftermarket before.

It would be cool to have a D Carr coin struck from a condemned die, such as this.

Thanks for sharing JR

I guess it stands to reason that the anvil die will develop scrape marks from the collar die, given that it rises to push every coin out of the collar. Unlike some of the buried CC dies, this was definitely use to strike coins. Hard to tell which ones because of rust, though.

That has already been done. Although I was not the owner of that die, I did "strike a deal" with the owner to use that die for all the "S"-mint strikes listed on this page: http://www.moonlightmint.com/blog_45.htm .
During use, the die did "mushroom" to a small degree, meaning that the die was squashed a little bit and the die face diameter expanded a small amount. The collar scrapes were the result of my using it.

Anyway, it seems like a pretty good deal for the new buyer.

Daniel, so sorry.
Stupid phone auto-corrects me all the time because of my bulbous thumbs.

I can say I was a bidder and that OK for now. It was the 21-D series

Thanks for the info!

Here it is in coin orientation, in case anyone wants to take a stab at attributing it. The turd in the G eliminates some. The break in the left wing was probably a production crack from the F to the right wreath.
