Two Privately-Made, recently found "in the wild" and high grade
Just acquired these two, purchased unattributed from sellers who were not aware of their origin. What is notable is that both are very high grade. I see no circulation wear at all on either.
The 1896-O VAM-21 always has a very granular obverse (as struck) with no cartwheel. The reverse also has some granularity as well.
If you ever see a mint-state Privately-Made, it is most likely going to be a 1901-O VAM-60 like the second one below.

Those are beauties!!
Did the seller price the 1896-O as a Mint State coin?

When in doubt... don't.

More counterfeits. Were they struck over authentic dollars or other coins like so many domestic counterfeits?
Crooks and cons.

If they did, it would have been a lot more expensive.
I think they knew something was amiss since the obverse had none of the usual luster.
So they tried to pass it off as a cheap uncirculated coin, not knowing it was actually struck that way.
Re: Two Privately-Made, recently found "in the wild" and high grade
Most counterfeits (especially vintage counterfeits) are not struck over existing genuine coins because there is no profit to be made in spending them.
At the time these VAM-listed "privately-made" were produced (probably 1910-1935), the scrap silver content in a Morgan dollar was about 40-cents or less. So for every one that the counterfeiters could make and spend, there was a profit of half a dollar or more.
Re: Two Privately-Made, recently found "in the wild" and high grade
Counterfeiting is illegal (in addition to immoral and unethical). The "name" applied to the counterfeit is not important and mutilating a genuine coins then punching it with fake dies still makes a counterfeit. The criminals can be foreign or domestic, bu the foreign ones have a biut or moral edge since the activity is legal in many of their countries -- only the importers and sellers are criminals. Domestic counterfeiters, distributors and sellers have no technicality to fall back on -- except their die work is so bad and childish, that it doesn't compare with fake Gucci stuff.

Roger, I take it you're not a fan of Daniel's work…

Roger B's disdain for Carr's work is well documented.
