My latest from PCGS

Post by fogie » Thu Jul 13, 2023 11:44 pm

Before departing for my trip to Alaska /Yukon a month ago, I decided to “deal with” some of the coins in my Special Little Box that piss me off aggravate me. The box has been growing for decades (literally) and has more coins than I selected for this submission, but I could not bring myself to crack them all out and send in for another round of "let's get me pissed aggravated with the grader." The PCI 1890-CC was the newest resident of the box. It was not in a body bag, but it still was “not right”.
I guess I should have sent in more. All but one was in “body bag” plastic. .. now only 4 are!

1880-S VAM-8 PCGS Genuine remains PGCS No Grade
1886 VAM-20 PCGS Genuine remains PCGS No Grade
1886-S VAM-1A ANACS AU Details (cleaned) became PCGS 55
1886-S VAM-1B ANACS AU Details (cleaned) became PCGS 58
1886-S VAM-2 PCGS Genuine became PCGS 64
1887-O VAM-44 ANACS MS Details (cleaned) became PCGS 64
1890-CC PCI MS63 DMPL became PCGS 58
1892 VAM-5 ANACS AU Details (cleaned) became PCGS 58
1894 VAM-3 NGC MS Details became PCGS No Grade
1894-O VAM-4 NGC AU Details became PCGS MS61
1897-O VAM-1A PCGS Genuine became PCGS 58
1898-O VAM-7 PCGS Genuine remains PCGS No Grade
Have a great day!

Goes to show ANACS is to to conservative when their details coins get
straight graded at PCGS. Fantastic results that make a person re think
some already graded details coins from other TPG services, on a selected basis

Congrads- worth the money this time

Nice! just goes to show you how fickle they can be. Too bad it has to cost us to re-submit the coins we felt good about to start with..

Different day, different graders, different game.
This is the most frustrating reality for us because they are rewarded by our resubmissions based on their wild subjectivity. Of course, we don't have to play the game their way and could get back to purely buying the coin(s) and not the holder(s)...

I'd love to see some emperical research that is truly blinded sending the same batch of coins to multiple grading houses and people to document the variability - and what underlies it so it might be explicitly addressed to get us to a less frustrating future.

Call me an idealistic researcher hobbyist investor geek?
