1882 O/S EDS Early Die Series

Post by morganman » Thu Jul 13, 2023 7:02 pm

Just counted my EDS o/s collection & proud owner of 126 coins from XF-MS63
with vam 4 EDS in 62PL my finest. Vam 3 & 5 in 63 my best

I will continue to purchase these rarer EDS as their way under valued IMHO
& hard to pass up at these prices, as nobody seems to care except me LOL
Buy when nobody cares & sell when everybody wants/needs em
Bought 10 or so recently on the cheap, possibly from The Gene Henry Hoard

Forgot to mention= To follow O/S rarity i have been searching/picking
1882 O vam 3A US Clashed Obv variety which is a
tough find, especially in uncleaned or scratched condition
Several yrs pickin has resulted in AU 58 the highest grade
& au50-55 still tough to locate in the wil

Has made for Fun times looking at all those raw vam 3 circs
Will it all pay off in end?- Who knows with this fickle mkt!!

Congrats on the finds. I wished I knew more about them but they seem to defy my logic - how an O/S can become more pronounced as it progresses from EDS to LDS seems backwards to me. Thus, I think I'm misunderstanding the whole thing.

Would love if someone would write up a detailed die study about them if it's not been done before.

Good luck with more finds as well as eventual sales. Who knows? Perhaps I might get the O/S bug and take some of them off your hands!

Until then, I'll stick with my favorite 78S misfits...

It's the same principle as breaking a filling in your teeth. Over time, pounding out silver dollars at 80 coins per minute, 140 tons per coin, whatever was filling the S broke free from the die, revealing more of the S.

Ah... havng a small chip on a tooth that begins to get bigger as time (and trauma) march on... NOW I get it. Mostly through lived experineces... Thanks. The fact that they get bigger with the shape of the S curve(s) is interesting and what makes collecting all that much more fun.
