1880-S Missing N in Reverse Motto
Having difficulty figuring this one out. Its an 1880-S in mint state. On the reverse it appears part of the "n" in the motto is broken. It also looks like it has some pitting on the obverse near the nose and eye. There is an die crack across the neck and some die cracks on the reverse at the wreath the wing, etc. What do you think?

Re: 1880-S Missing N in Reverse Motto
Wanting to help you 'fish for youself' instead of 'giving you a fish' I'll start the questioning: what else have you noticed? What parts of the 1880-S page and guides have you searched?
I'd highly recommend going straight to http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compu ... S_Reverses and looking very carefully at the mintmark first... then the digits of the date... which will very quickly narrow down your search. The secondary PUPs will help guide you.
The 'n' of In looks to be a partially filled die strike versus PMD (post-mint damage). Cool but unlistable - just like any cracks you might notice (helpful for potentially identifying your variety but not listable per se)...
Let us know how you get on and what you've ruled out - as well as what you may potentially rule in so we can help steer you and cheer you on?

Can’t tell from pics
Any date doubling?
Standard/large s normal placement
The rest is moot for now

Large S upright and centered, set low
Re: 1880-S Missing N in Reverse Motto
Yes it definitely looks like a partially filled die on the N. Interesting that these are noted in 1921 Vams listed but not on 1880-s http://www.vamworld.com/wiki/1921-P_VAM-14
I appreciate the help. Still not sure the vam, but I may be missing something. It doesn't look like a vam 88 and not sure about the date matching. Thanks again

Re: 1880-S Missing N in Reverse Motto
Most of the San Fran dollars from 78 through 82 are easy to find in spectacular condition, there are/were tons of die combinations that were (mis)treated and reused, and they're inexpensive... combining to give a LOT of information on a wide spectrum of varieties.
You've entered into the matrix...
Lots to unpack here, but important to the 80S series beyond the mintmark are if there is very very specific details about any digit doubling. Secondary PUPs will help, but I'd suggest the focus on the date.
Mentioning it might be a VAM-88 is a good start but does the doubling on the coin exactly match? If not... brute force. If brute force ends in frustration alone, there is always a chance to send it in to either of the Johns to get an official stance...
Welcome to the craziness - it don't pay much, but it is a lot of fun.

Normal or set low
Is a matter of perspective
You need to look at both for this attribution
What VAN do you think it is?
