1921 VAM-1AI

Post by ChrisPaulis » Tue Jul 04, 2023 1:56 pm

I picked up a nice BU Morgan and pretty quickly identified the VAM; then I zoomed in with my scope to examine the obverse. The VW description says that it has "Slightly doubled hair front and top of Phrygian cap." What I see is rather dramatic tripling in those places, plus doubling in many others. I'm surprised that this VAM is listed only by the scribbling scratches when it has so much else going for it -- doubled date and LIBERTY, tripled hair front and cap back.

One of the obverse working hubs had a quad spread. You can also see it in the front of the upper hair. This feature got listed several times before we picked up on the fact that it repeated on multiple working dies with a virtually identical spread.
Welcome to the 'wonderful' world of 20th century varieties. 21 Morgan doubled dies might as well be Ikes.

This is not an intuitive link but you might see http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compu ... _Varieties where the 'incuse lines' are discussed a bit more...

@keilg1 lg1 Thanks. I had read that, which is why I was able to detect the single incuse line. I'm learning!
