1st strike question
Hi All
When I get a Coin from the mint and want to get a 1st strike designation from PCGS .
I understand it has to be submitted within the 1st 30 days of issue . But should I send the coins in the original box from the Mint ? Or the packages the mint provides ? Just wanted to know the proper procedure . Im not sure if PCGS returns the coin packaging/paper work . And if this is important to keep with the coin . Any Ideas or experience on this is greatly appreciated . This has been a question of mine for abit of time , just wanted to know the proper and recommended procedure on this .
Thanks Iceman/John

Has to be submitted within 30 days of issue or be shipped later in unopened mint packaging that it was mailed in that shows a shipping date within 30 days of issue. No idea about returning packaging. You probably will have to pay extra for that.iceman wrote: ↑Fri Jun 30, 2023 1:59 amHi All

Re: 1st strike question
I thought only the large companies got the coins early enough for first strike. All the boxes I have recieved were always just past the end date that is listed on PCGS First strike date page for each specific coin or set. Am I correct @messydesk or can regular people get sets with the early date on the shipping box?
They must have taken my marbles away
Re: 1st strike question
You got the right answer already. But I will say that the First Strike designation is of dubious value for resale. Just cannot compete with the big wholesalers that get preferentially lower pricing (and provision for First Day of Issue). I used to get the FS and gold shield, but the margins are too low and buyers won't pay those upcharges. Maybe for the Morgan/Peace releases, it is a little different. Definitely not for the silver eagles, unless you want to lose $40/coin, be they graded 69 or 70.

Messydesk
That explains alot to me about that , Its all in the PROOF of 30 Days , and if over the 30 Days ship the box unopened ! Makes sense and thanks for the explanation .
Yep the subscription that the US Mint does now is supposed to even the field with the collectors vs dealers . So it should in Theory be the same ship dates for everyone .
Im kind of a Coin hoarder so I just like the idea of get the 1st strike with PCGS and also the Gold Shield . Just how I get my coins done in my collection . Yep its for the Morgan/ Peace release on 13th July ( My questions ) .
Thanks to all for you Insight !!! This explains alot !!!

Re: 1st strike question
I really hate the fact about the "unopened".. when all the big dealers end up with 70's and yours magically comes back as a 67.... no explanation... and you couldn't crack the box. Remember to request the packaging back, it is not automatic.

Re: 1st strike question
I think the only coin I've purchased that said "First Strike" I acquired for less than the cost of the First Strike designation alone.

Re: 1st strike question
Given that "First Strike" is entirely specious, what's the point? [The first 100 coins from new dies are not segregated. Your "First Strike" coin likely came from some later portion of the die pair's usable life. It wasn't 'first' at anything, and might really have been 'last.']
Re: 1st strike question
Coins that don't qualify for First Strike™ include the 1878 VAM 9, 1878-S VAM 60, a roll of 1979 SBA dollars postmarked the day of their release.

Re: 1st strike question
Really confused on Ebay...
There are listings for CC, D and O 2023 Morgans (pre-order, First stike, Early Release, etc.), yet the mint only is offering P & S.
Are these bogus or am I missing something?

@SilverToken
It looks to me like they have 2 business strike" copies" scheduled July 13th , 2 proof strike" copies" scheduled AUG 9 and possibility 2 reverse proofs scheduled for the fall of 2023 . All I could find was S and P mints however .....https://catalog.usmint.gov/coins/coin-p ... lar-coins/

Re: 1st strike question
I get that info, the meat of my question is CC-D-O's being offered on eBay, but not by the mint (FYI- not buying or selling them on eBay). Are the listings nefarious, or is the mint offering the big boys something special?UNCLE BINGO wrote: ↑Sun Jul 02, 2023 3:40 pm@SilverToken

Re: 1st strike question
Hmmm I am unsure of an answer here. It is very suspicious either way
Here is the biggest problem I can see....18 dealers who comprise the Authorized Bulk Purchase Program.....
Much like you hinted at in a previous post , do the coins sent in for grading by these 'Big Dealers " result in a disproportionate rate of grading higher ???? Lots of 70's it seems ,,,
Of course they are going to get First Strike , they get the coins early .
Sounds more like a violation of the Ricco statute to me
Hey It's just how it looks from the outside ....

Re: 1st strike question
@SilverToken I am going to take a best guess and say the Ebay Advertisements are probably nefarious, but I have NO way to know for sure ... Some of that stuff does seem fishy . I remember when PCGS got its wings clipped in Maybe the early 90's ... Things are so much bigger now than back then . Who knows for sure ??? Not me

Re: 1st strike question
I noticed today that the subscription for the reverse proof 2 coin 2023 Morgan and Peace set has begun for anyone that may be interested from the US Mint .

Re: 1st strike question
I personally have not purchased any of these , they seem like a (heavily inflated ) high dollar bullion and agree with the statement you have passed along . ON the other hand I can see that the reverse proof set might be just different enough and rare enough to hold interest in the same category as the RP's sets produced for the silver eagles through the years . IMHO few modern coins stack up to the 2021 designer silver eagle sets that came out . Those coins are flat out pretty ....

Re: 1st strike question
I can offer something I witnessed once
I believe Tim Kenny Rob and I met up in Baltimore on a Sat.
The mint was there doing a release of dollars and other stuff
The “TV” guys were buying in large quantities and going straight to the TPGs and submitting
Not certain if they were getting “first strike” or first day of issue, but keep an eye out for shows like that… one stop shopping.
