New Orleans MInt dollar coinage and dies used Feb 1904
This might be of interest to some members. It appears that when one die was condemned, it's pair was also removed from service.

This information is very interesting and thank you for posting it

I plan to collect VAMs and maybe discover new ones, but until then I'm just here.
Don't forget this is a live and learn hobby have fun with it.

Except that in both cases, they were put back into service. Obverse 64 was used with reverses 64 and 66, reverse 62 was used with obverses 62 and 65. This table actually shows mintages for die marriages, which is super helpful for us. I want to know what happened to the 64-66 pair that condemned them both after fewer than 10,000 strikes. Could be a bad clash, I guess. A quick glance at Alan's "die incest" chart shows a few possibilities.

I think it is very interesting and as pointed out it shows very low mintage for some die pairs. Unfortunately nearly impossible to match to a particular VAM but it still means some are very scarce. Thanks for posting.

I love seeing the information.
I was waiting for Allen. I bet he has an interesting take on this particular list.
Fascinating how they pair up number wise. Roger you and I diescussed this once, I doubt it;s random...the low strikes could be late month fewer days or disaster...who knows. Full annual counts by die pair, I'm drooling thinking about it. I wish you had it for 1882's.

I will look. Annual, rather than monthly die use lists began in 1881. We have no way to tell which were preserved and which "lost" or discarded.
New image files come in every week, and each file is from 500 to 1,300 pages long. Also, Many are presscopy pages which are often over poor quality.
This is what I have so far for Philadelphia.... The NO die destruction list has not yet appeared.

i've always found the docs useful and interesting including when i've assisted to transcribe.
when studying old coinage, my mind OFTEN wonders, what the heck was going on at the mint(s). reading the docs sure does shed a lovely light on some glimpses.

Extrapolation exercise...
981,089 dollars coined, in 1 month, using 11 marriages; consisting of 10 obverse and 11 reverse dies.
5 pairs did the bulk of the work @ 670,922 (if I added correctly) with 2 of those marriages accounting for almost 1/2 @ 315,337....Good stuff
What else?
