Striation lines, are these PMD?

Post by demetri » Fri May 26, 2023 9:11 pm

This pretty 1883 O has heavy lines across date. What the heck are these lines and are they bad?

From here it looks like it left the mint that way .looks more like a file on the die than striation though

I don't think they are file lines. I've seen this phenomenon on some 78-S Dollars as well.

These were on the planchet before it was struck, created when the strip was drawn out to the correct thickness.

Does it weight a hair more, or less than spec? I'll Guess its not bad IMO , in answer to your question . But it wont get a new VAM number .What say you @vampicker , same as JB ????. Afraid this is going to take more study than just a simple google search will accommodate , to have a better self understanding of for me .

Appreciate the second opinion .after the OP gets done asking questions I have a few questions about my recent GC purchase and this title is very appropriate

And @messydesk , I did not doubt you , I just don't visually understand this one man . In my feeble mind It still looks like a file drug across the die , although I will concede to your two's expertise /

I guess what I mean to say is, does it affect the grade of the coin?? Is it a negative to the condition? I imagine it is an oddity not a vam, although it is kind of cool

I imagine they are correcting the thickness of the planchets for size and weight and is left behind by the tool blade and missed at QC then struck on top of it. At first I was not sure if it went under or over the top.

Like JB said, the scratches are caused by a drawbench or roller mill and not an intentional adjustment to planchet weight, so I guess dirty or worn equipment so roller marks or Planchet Roller Marks. So these are a mint error and Im going to guess not a good one.

It would not be noted. Not a thing I'd encourage anyone to chase.

While this one is most likely due to planchet filing as mentioned above, these exist in Peace dollars which are in the die. See 1922S VAM 1-S. Keep on looking, there are good coins out there!
