my marker bid won!
Earlier this month on eBay I placed a very modest bid on an NGC MS62 1881-O VAM 1D "Flakey Eye" that was identified by the seller, but not attributed on the holder, so I could see what the winning bid wound up being. Surprise! -- it turned out to be my bid.
When in doubt... don't.
Re: my marker bid won!
Nice...
The raw one I snagged not long ago is at ANACS being graded but is certainly not going to be anywhere near the 62 you've gotten.

Wow! Thats a nice one! Congrats on your great deal on a great Morgan!
They must have taken my marbles away
Re: my marker bid won!
Still say that should have been named 'stink eye'
often the crusher of hopes and dreams
Re: my marker bid won!
Sweet.... Nice pick, nice surprise too. Congrats
Re: my marker bid won!
NICE FIND Dennis, and graded to boot.
I like "Flaming Devil Eye"
I was lucky enough to have spotted this nice 'ungraded 1881 O',
WAY back in 2013 on Ebay and jumped on it. (see seller's picture)
I was jumping up and down, I was so excited, that I spotted the eye.
It took me an hour to find it here.
I looked on the 1881 O VAM 1D VAM page and only saw pictures
of the obverse and the FLAKY eye.
I hope you don't mind me posting some pictures of mine, to
ask the questions below Dennis?
Does the front of LIBERTY'S neck on yours look like this on mine?
Does the upper inside, of the first 8, look like this too?
Would you please post more pictures of your 1881 O VAM 1D?
Thanks, Bert

Re: my marker bid won!
Question wasn't to me but I'll answer based on my coin: yes to both - stuff at the neck and metal/blod in the upper loop of first 8.

Re: my marker bid won!
Yes, my coin has the "stuff" in front of the neck (along with an unfortunate blob of crud):
And it has the dot inside the top loop of the 1st 8:
Here's a shot of the flakey eye with the light coming from a different direction, which really accentuates the yellow/orange toning highlights the coin has:
Here's a shot of several minor polishing lines around the lower cotton leaf:
And because I couldn't resist looking, I did find a couple of things in the scribbles areas:

Re: my marker bid won!
GREAT, THANK YOU
I tried to see that perfect oval blob, with just my loupe, but I didn't see it.
I'll get on my old PC, where I can use my digital microscope and look closer later here.
Do yo see it on your VAM 1D Gary?
I didn't notice those lines below the leaves (obv) and above the eagle's claws (rev).
Are those polish lines?
I hope someone adds all of these die markers to the VAM 1D page.
Besides walking back into my woods, with my dog, this is my favorite thing to do.

Try as I might, I wasn't able to pick up that perfect oval blob on the neck.
Here are my best attempts ,to pick up the lines on the different locations on my coin.
How about your 1881 O Gray, does yours have that oval blob on the neck?

That blob on my coin is crud/debris/junk that shouldn't be there, so It's good that your coin doesn't have it -- and I wish mine didn't.
When in doubt... don't.

Re: my marker bid won!
WOW! Sometimes ya just catch folks sleeping Dennis, WTG!!
Crazy things happen in the bay sometimes, like, one time I saw an MS65 1881-P listed at common date money and thought "Naw, this has to be a misprint, but I gotta check" and, sure enough, it was actually an 1881-S...
The kicker? That MS65 1881-S was a 54b!!! Hell, I woulda paid 81-P MS65 money for it but didn't even have to!!

Re: my marker bid won!
Well, to be fair, that moniker was published once... so, if anyone wondered why the "also known as the 'Stink Eye' to some..." is in the guide, it is revealed to be a nod to JR!

I've been on the receiving end of 'stink eye' a few times....

Dennis you wrote

I was wishing my 1881 O had that perfectly oval shaped metal, on the neck.
I thought it was unique.
I thought it looked like the oval metal on the eagle's right wing, on my
1904 O PCGSMS64 VAM 37A.
I was thinking it would be notable and an important die marker, like on the
1904 O VAM 37A.
