1882-P Vam 14 or 31?

Post by SilverToken » Wed May 24, 2023 11:54 am

The recent 82-P VAM 20 string spurred me to re-examine my meager 82's and this lost child popped up. I noticed that it had the hair curl gouge which lead me to the VAM 14 which states "MAY NOT EXIST". I then went to the VAM 31 and I believe the cotton gouge and the "1" gouge differ. On the reverse the wing gouges are fewer, the tail gouges have prominent markers which are not named. Neither coin has full coin images.

Anyone that has a 31... Take a look.

Darwin would be beside himself, similar to me. I don’t have this stage…
You’ll need this defined by the powers that be. I always recommend JR. If your hell bent on stickering it, send it in alone…to answer your actual question would send it with a 31 and a “14”
Here’s what I see
Both obverse and reverse have been chemically treated, I don’t see the pepper in this pile of fly sh!t. It’s a tweener (IMO) remember Varieties don’t mean a specific die. I’m tracking actual dies…
What state and stage dictate arbitrary designations (1 mans 31a is another man’s 31…)
I am unclear if it a different marriage/pairing, or not, full disclosure. If I thought my work was complete I’d likely be pushing my book by now.
I would likely put this one between the two and label it LDS 14 in VAM lingo solely based on the secondaries (or lack there-of). My designation of the obverse and reverse is inconsequential, in this forum.

Thanks for the question and the excellent photos! This actually was extremely helpful to my study.

and

I have seven V31's from (eds to Vlds), two 31A's and a "14" (I'll TTT the thread, in case you missed it).

I won't be sending them anywhere for attribution, due to fear of reprisal, so I hope it goes to JR, he'll get it properly slotted. My guess is he's seen at least one of these, doubtful he'll chime in here....

MORGAN 1882 VAM-14 0 0 0 4 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 5

One in AU50, and four in 63 for a total of 5 graded and attributed at ANACS.

To my eye that lower scratch is an evil mimic, the placement and angle is ever so slightly different.

Good luck, let me know what he says please.

Thanks for your response.

The re-posting of your VAM-14 does exist was helpful, I need to get my Discussion Forum searching skills dialed in. The reverse matches the tail gouges as well as the bump in the field by the left talon to a tee. Furthermore, there is no gouge in the eagle neck gap as pictured the V31 notes.

I agree that the VAM 14 does exist. Maybe both of these threads could be linked to the coin page?

And there are at least 3 coins!
