1889-P VAM-7 Series Update

Post by PacificWR » Mon May 15, 2023 9:02 pm

This update of the 1889-P VAM-7 Series has been in the works for a little more than two years. Whenever I have a new Die Sequence to list, I have a rule to first have three specimens in hand or have conformation of three specimens. Well, after a little more than two years of searching (I am still looking for the 3rd specimen), it is time to get this update in the books. This update is for a new Die Sequence #1 for the 1889-P VAM-7. Unlike the Obverse Die of the 1889-P VAM-23 Series that has fine raised dots all over the field (but not the design), the new Die Sequence #1 for VAM-7 has fine raised dots all over the Design (but not the field) of the Obverse Die. In addition, The Reverse for the new Die Sequence #1 for VAM-7 still has a partial clash to the right wreath from the 1889-P VAM-23A clashing events. Remember, this is a new Obverse die paired with the Reverse Die of the 1889-P VAM-23, VAM-23A and VAM-23B. The 1889-P VAM-7 page has been updated.

In summary, after a very short run (supported by the facts) of VAM-7 Die Sequence #1 the Obverse Die was removed and repolished to a PL appearance (now Die Sequence #2). The Reverse Die was repolished, too.

Shown below are the 1889-P VAM-7 Die Sequence #1 and Die Sequence #2.

Finally, there will be an update to the 1889-P VAM-23 Series after the supporting photographs can be completed.

A. Coin #1 is for the new 1889-P VAM-7 Die Sequence #1.
B. Coin #2 is for the 1889-P VAM-7 Die Sequence #2 (PL Obverse).

Section A, Coin #1
The new Die Sequence #1 for the 1889-P VAM-7 has an open 9 (same faulty 9 logo punch) in the date and this is different than the rest of the VAM-7 Series. The rest of the die markers (except the severe pitting), dot on the R of "LIBERTY", polishing lines under the lower cap edge and polishing lines in the ear are the same as the rest of the VAM-7 Series. See photos below.

Coin #1 is Die Sequence #1, 1889-P VAM-7. Severe fine Die Pitting all over Liberty Head, Face and Neck. Single Clashed Right Wreath on Reverse from the 1889-P VAM-23A Clashing Events.

Section B, Coin #2
This section features the 1889-P VAM-7 Die Sequence #2 (PL Obverse). The severe die pitting on the design has been for the most part polished away and the 9 in the date is now closed. All other die markers are the same as in the VAM-7 Series. See photos below.

Coin #2 is Die Sequence #2, 1889-P VAM-7 Repolished (PL) Obverse to Remove Severe Die Pitting.
