Strange 1879 S over S
I picked this up earlier today to try to VAM it for a dealer. At first I was thinking Strike doubling but no other area looks to be doubled at all, and the secondary S is "Raised" Any clues ???

Re: Strange 1879 S over S
Doesn't look like any strike doubling I have ever seen. Looks like it was punched twice.
Re: Strange 1879 S over S
I've seen this quite a few times. Not sure what the actual terminology for it, but it is a minting error similar with machine doubling. I'm pretty sure some of the berries show the same effect.

This. I'm seeing a similar "shadow" on the right sides of "OLL".

Almost looks like a localized-ish form of "DDD" (Die Deterioration Doubling)

Looks like SD to me...

Interesting but not unique. Not sure what to call it -I would avoid the term doubling. Maybe metal memory / die fatigue phenominon?7
