79-S B2a Study

Post by messydesk » Sun Apr 30, 2023 4:32 am

Saturday at a big show when the dealer is gone but the plastic tablecloth is still there, you have a blank canvas upon which to study the progression of the 1879-S B2a reverse.

56, 149, and 66 may not be in exactly the right order, and it may never be possible to determine the right order for those 3.

C'mon you just need multiple examples of each to place side by side and stare at them for hours, passing them back and forth after dinner. It helps if you have at least a couple of people that have no deep interest in varieties that agree to dinner, with no idea a lengthy research session is on the menu for dessert.

This novice could digest that a little easier if it wasn't in a right to left format. Is that a numismatist thing? I did like seeing that census for this date in the attribution guides. Kudo's to someone.

We also didn't have the restaurant quality lighting.

Just happened to be how we laid them out on the table. We decided we needed to document it, so I captioned it on the tablecloth without moving the coins around, then Michael took the picture.

Ah, a bunch of left-handed people I imagine. But seriously, the progression thing is something I'd like to eventually understand so I appreciate the post. I'll be looking at it quite a bit over the next few weeks. Thanx JB

Missing from the progression for that reverse were the two that came earlier, but as they're dated 1878, it's pretty obvious where they go. Any time you get one die used in 8 different die marriage, that's a cool thing. When it spans 2 years, even more cool.

I lost it when John began writing on the tablecloth. It was spontaneous & very funny.

B2a is such an interesting reverse. Lots of discussion went into these over the course of the show.

i found the vam 149at a recent show and identifying it was giving me fits. at first i thought it could be an eds vam 4, but that didn't work, then 23 was out, and i know it couldn't be 56, 66, or 25. it was found on the 3rd day of a show.

I think VAM-149 struck before VAM-66, based on the relationship of the reverse of 79 counterpart.
While VAM-56 is the "problem child". Can't find the right place for it :D

And that v56 obverse had to have been used before. I just can’t find one. I did pick another v56 in fine at csns, along with a gorgeous 79s vam 16a. I think i tried to link it to the v34b/57,77,77a,83(and another that leroy wouldn’t list because it was too low of a grade).
