1921 Peace pattern silver coated copper, looking for info
I saw this listed in the Judd book and was wondering if there is any more info about it anywhere. I'm curious if they coated the planchet then struck it or struck a copper planchet then coated it with silver. Also, what was the purpose in doing this instead of using silver? I see the Philadelphia mint made the 25g 37mm 5 Bolivar 90% silver coins for Venezuela in 1921 (but not 1922). I take it production of those had finished earlier in the year and there were no planchets at hand? But then again they did copper die trials of Morgans and gold coins. Why not use the same metal as intended for the coin? Was it just the expense of the bullion value (a dollar was a lot back then)? Were there copper die trials of Ike dollars?

Do you have a Judd number for it? I do not recall Peace patterns. There was a 1921 Morgan pattern struck in nickel.
As for whether such an item would be plated before or after, it would almost certainly have been after. I sent a gold-plated O/S Morgan to Daniel Carr for his Moonlight Mint Open House annual overstriking in 2019. It split the plating here and there. If they did so, it would probably have been afterward to demonstrate the appearance of a production piece in silver. But a Judd or Pollack number would be useful for the discussion (or a page number even).

I have read something about a couple Morgan dollars being struck on aluminum before . But have not researched the subject

My Judd book doesn't go past 1916, but if you're referring to J-2015, according to uspatterns.com, that has been discredited as being mutilated regular issues
