First VAM Thing

Post by vampicker » Wed Apr 19, 2023 12:41 pm

I was looking for something else, but ran across a video of the inaugural VAM Thing meeting, the only one I haven't attended .

In addition to being one of the all-time good guys in the history of the world, it's scary how much at ease Jeff is in front of an audience.
When in doubt... don't.

Fantastic find - thanks for sharing. Only a few minutes into it and am so appreciative of the historical perspective and information.

Thanks again.

Wow, where did all of the grey hair go? I was there for awhile but had to cut out before it ended. 20 years ago! Glad you found this john.

Really worth the watch.

It is a great look back to where VAM, Clash and sharing ideas were forming just 19 years ago, and the use of technology. All the hard work just to get to that point, and the work since is not be taken for granted by me.

It really makes me value those top 100 slabs that were correctly VAM'd in the window of the publication to that time, and on of course.

I wonder how many of these collectors check in on the forum to see how their ideas grew....

Thanks for sharing
When it's no longer fun, I think I'm done!

I got interested in vams when pcgs put out list of vams they attributed.
I found vam world and that site was great help.
I spent 20 years going to shows meeting vam people and having lunches together.
St Charles Mo was a great place to meet people.
I remember lunches of probably 20 vam people.
Was a great time to show and talk vams.
Kansas City was another great place for lunches.
Another great bunch of guys.
I remember taking 100 pcgs vams at lunches there.
Through my 20 years I put together several pcgs sets and met several vam people all over the US.
Yes vam world was the best help anyone could ask for.

I will never forget all the fun I had.

At 80 years old I have sold some of my sets but still spend every day searching for vams.

Thanks to all who help me through this trip.

Larry

Great to revisit some of the VAM Things I attended and see others I missed, (Funny how I always seem to have sat in the same seat.) Hopefully, someone, perhaps in the organization, will continue David Lisot's documenting of these meetings. I seem to remember at least some of the Long Beach NSDR meetings having been recorded by him as well.

The first VAM Thing (and FUN Show) I attended was the year AFTER Leroy went for the last time. Whatever year that was. Never did meet Leroy, sigh.

@messydesk So i got to ask what happened to the attribution wizard idea ? 19 years I would think that being on the ground floor as it were ,,, there would be a pay app for that ,,,,make it so easy any new collector could interact with, the limited AI ??? and you sitting on the beach sipping an umbrella drink .

I only ask because I recognize genius when I see it

I eventually released 7 different titles as stand-along Windows software, 8TF, 1878 B reverse, 79-S Rev 78, Top 100, Hot 50, Hit List 40, Top 50 Peace. None have been updated for a long time, and it's probably not worth my while to do, as there's not as big of a demand as you might think for these anymore. If I were to bring them back to life, they'd have to be web apps, and I'd have a hard time getting minimum wage for my time porting them. My plate's pretty full as it is. I'm not sitting on the beach with an umbrella drink, but I was sitting on the couch earlier with a brandy old-fashioned.
