Oh goodness! Of course they minted after '78. They had to have something for all those mint employees to do.

With the passage of the "Work Avoidance Act" in 1871 the government had to come up with something to keep those thousands of individuals occupied.

It wasn't until late 1878 when some bureaucratic busybody finally stumbled upon a way to implement WAA large scale. Seeing how popular the new Morgan dollars were and knowing that sequels are always great, they were able to talk the mint director into keeping the ball rolling.

(It took 7 years because WAA activities were prolific and easy to come by on the "individual" level but it wasn't until the introduction of the Morgan dollar that somebody saw a way to affect the masses.)

And still today, WAA and Morgan dollars remain synonymous for thousands.

I must not be understanding this game very well . Not sure I could have found O/S with the date and ear pic provided....and the work avoidance act is a product of more modern times. Post Covid I think . 😆

I may have been unclear. The picture isn't the answer, it's another clue. This is how PCGS attributed it. This is one of the evil mimics. The question is which one.

Good guess(es) in my opinion. I was leaning toward the 32A but was holding on contributing until @UNCLE BINGO had another go! ;)

No to 32, 32A, 37, and 37A.

And the original pic is titled "second 8."

I thought one guess each per clue might raise the stakes a bit . I had a second choice but want to review this latest clue first . I wasn't sure how this game was played in the past .

And I thought you'd go straight to 44 after your 1st guess since they share.

But, yes, you're right. VAM 44 is correct.

Well done.

Jonnie

ps. Pardon the quality of the pic. Storm knocked out the power so no computer and I had to use a flashlight since the flash on my phone said no because it's battery is low. Gotta love it!

Whew  I just didn't want to say both answers the other night , figured it was a 50/50 chance the first time , then spent the rest of that time trying to find the right 82 to put up, if I was correct  I took some pictures of one coin , because I have already put 2 ,of the other 82's I have on the forum the past couple months .. So please give me a second to either make double sure I have the right VAM number before we start another round . or I might need to pick another coin to put in its place    So what are the rules for posting a coin now ?????

If you can get other good pictures of the VAM-44, I'll add them to the page as it is currently rather sparsly populated.

Great job, @UNCLE BINGO, but be careful as you'll quickly live the
