DARKSIDE QUESTION 1923 PEACE DOLLAR VAM 2AF
I was looking through my silver dollars and saw my 1923 PCGSMS63 Peace dollar, that I had marked as
a VAM 2AF and that Dr Close had discovered it.
It had been awhile back.
That VAM 2AF, isn't listed on the 1923 vams now.
I tried to find a Dr Close post or reply, so I could click and PM him and ask him.
Thanks, Bert

Re: DARKSIDE QUESTION 1923 PEACE DOLLAR VAM 2AF
Is 1923 the correct year, or a typo?
Re: DARKSIDE QUESTION 1923 PEACE DOLLAR VAM 2AF
Bert, I don't see a 2AF for the 1923 has ever been listed. Could it be the 1AF? Shoot us some pics and we'll get her figured out

Re: DARKSIDE QUESTION 1923 PEACE DOLLAR VAM 2AF
Please check your coin over and holder . No B2 REV for 1923 P D or S ...
Re: DARKSIDE QUESTION 1923 PEACE DOLLAR VAM 2AF
Tom, you mean no B1 rev correct? All 23's are B2 reverses

Re: DARKSIDE QUESTION 1923 PEACE DOLLAR VAM 2AF
Typing error .. NO B1 REV . Thank you for the correction . Must be the old age catching up with me .

Trust me my friend, I know the feeling

Re: DARKSIDE QUESTION 1923 PEACE DOLLAR VAM 2AF
THANK YOU EVERYONE
Sorry it took me so long.
It is a nice sunny day here in Ohio and I was back in my woods, with my dog most of the day.
Here are pictures of my 1923 PCGSMS63 and the note I had inside the plastic cover.
I checked the vam 2A and there is no die break on the eagle's wing, on mine.
I checked the vam 2 and there is no doubled tiara on mine.
I looked it over good and the only thing I see, is the ray over the 'B', in LIBERTY and the 'I' both look flat.
I showed pictures of my B and I and then a normal B and I..
Any help would be greatly appreciated, Bert

Re: DARKSIDE QUESTION 1923 PEACE DOLLAR VAM 2AF
The B and the Rays are similarly flattened. I'm gonna say 90% probability it's PMD (bottom of the bag). 10% flow/short fill issue from weak strike (unlikely as the rest of the coin looks like strongly struck).

Agreed, the flatting looks PMD. Bert, I don't see anything earth shattering on the coin. Maybe look at the area I circled, could be gouges?
Re: DARKSIDE QUESTION 1923 PEACE DOLLAR VAM 2AF
If the comment "The B and the Rays are similarly flattened. I'm gonna say 90% probability it's PMD (bottom of the bag)," and similar ones refer to these two photos ---
--- then there is some misinformation floating about. The observed flattening toward the rim - a "chisel effect" - is due to insufficient metal flow from the center to periphery of the planchet when struck. It is very common and is not due to damage or "bottom of the bag," (whatever that means).

So 10% flow. Good thing I didn't lay a c note on that.
There appears to be significant additional PMD associated with the flattening, not having the coin in hand is tough to tell for sure.
Next time I gues it's 50/50.
I'm struggling to rationalize innsufficient flow. Was the Anvil "cushioned" or improperly seated, did it "bounce" on strike?
Was the planchet underwirght? Were the dies mis-aligned when seated?
Sorry, I would buy grease filled over short strike, based on the totallity of this particular coin, as a whole.
Thank you for helping me understand the engineering mechanics of this?

Re: DARKSIDE QUESTION 1923 PEACE DOLLAR VAM 2AF
I’m on this small phone but does the southeast portion of the rim also look weak opposite of the area in question? Similar to the Blakeslee effect in say tapered planchets? Do peace and Morgans ever exibit this or was it possible for them to be minted on tapered planchets’. Yellow is what looks weak to me
